Chatham House Event on Food Security and Agriculture
Executive Secretary Participates in Agricultural Transformation Conference
On December 14-15, Chatham House hosted “Food Security 2011: Transforming the Food Production System.” The conference brought together business leaders and representatives from the private sector, governments, multilateral agencies, and non-governmental organizations to discuss how to make the global agricultural system more productive, efficient, resilient, and environment-friendly. Participants examined changing agricultural investment patterns, with a focus on international policy developments and business approaches for coping with environmental shocks and stresses presented by climate change and global population growth. They also discussed how practices, value chains, and trade need to be transformed in order to meet the growing global demand for food.
During the conference in London, Jonathan Wadsworth, Executive Secretary of the CGIAR Fund Council, gave a presentation on “Prioritizing and Delivering Investment in Agricultural Productivity.” Noting that productivity must improve substantially in order to meet future food demand, Wadsworth called for increased and sustained investment in agricultural R&D, and emphasized the need for adequate investment by both the public and private sectors.
